‘Chuck’ fans to stage flash mobs to support show

Exclu: “Chuck” fans have a plan to rally support for the NBC series, and this time it doesn’t involve buying sandwiches.

With the action-comedy on the bubble for a renewal, “Chuck” fans are staging themed flash mobs in at least four cities on Monday. In Chicago, Seattle, San Diego and Philadelphia, “Chuck” fans plan to gather while dressed in the show’s Buy More-style clothing (short-sleve work shirts, name tags and the like).

The idea is from “Chuck” fan site chucktv.net, one of the sites that spearheaded last year’s “Finale and a Footlong” campaign that made national headlines when fans bought sandwiches from “Chuck” sponsor Subway. While the previous effort was about sending a message to NBC that fans will support the show’s advertisers, this year it’s about trying to market the show to potential viewers.

“Chuck fans are the most loyal, dedicated, imaginative, and passionate fans any show could ever hope for,” said “Chuck” co-creator Josh Schwartz. “Every season they offer more proof they should be licensed and professional fans teaching other fans how it’s done. This is yet another example of their awesomeness. We are, as always, grateful and inspired to deliver a show as good to them as they are to us.”

The College Hill/Wonderland/Warner Bros.-produced series has been on the verge of a pickup at NBC, with indications suggesting the network is bullish about returning the show. “Chuck” has been the most stable part of the network’s Monday night lineup in a year that saw companion series “Heroes” drop significantly.

Elite signed up for killer roles

CLIVE Owen is on board the film The Killer Elite, due to begin filming in Melbourne next month. Australian expat Yvonne Strahovski is also expected to join the cast. Last week, while promoting the new Australian romantic comedy I Love You Too, Strahovski said she had another Australian film readying for production but was not yet allowed to speak. It is The Killer Elite, based on the Ranulph Fiennes novel The Feather Men, about a vigilante group protecting the families of SAS agents. Jason Statham will also star in the film by Irishman Gary McKendry. Strahovski, who had her big break in US television series Chuck, also stars in the Australian film by Nadia Tass, Matching Jack, with Richard Roxburgh, Jacinda Barrett and James Nesbitt. Chuck returned to with a 2.1 rating with adults 18-49, exactly the same as its last new episode on April 5. With a mere 1.6 adults 18-49 rating, Trauma had its best outing since November 30. SOURCE

“Chuck’s” ratings situation

27 April 2010 by Robert Seidman Monday night Chuck returned after a couple of weeks of reruns for its final six episodes of the season. “Chuck vs. the Honeymooners” was sure to make fans happy, even the “shippers” (perhaps, especially the “shippers”) but will the ratings keep the fans in good spirits? While I definitely agree with the Renew/Cancel Index for currently having Chuck listed as being in some danger of being canceled Specifically I disagree with “Make no mistake, the ratings have to come back, or the show is history.” For me, Chuck is still a bubble show even with its most recent ratings., If the price is right, I could definitely see NBC ordering up 13 episodes as schedule filler even at the 2.1 rating with adults 18-49 that it got with its two most recent episodes. The two episodes before that it was definitely in more perilous territory with a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating (yes, I know “that always happens when Daylight Saving Time starts, the ratings go down and come back, that happened last, year too!”). That said, if Chuck doesn’t average a 2.0 or better over its last six* episodes, it’s probably a goner, even if Warner Bros is willing to play “Let’s Make a Deal” with NBC when it comes to licensing fees. To be clear, I’m not saying that I think Chuck is a lock to be renewed if it pulls a 2.0 adults 18-49 for all of its remaining episodes. I don’t think that. Even at a 2.1, or even if it goes up to a 2.2, for that matter, I’d still think it was in danger. I just don’t think it’s a certainty that it’s history if the ratings don’t improve from its most recent performance. A 2.0 is perhaps an arbitrary line to draw, but I’m drawing it anyway. Sure, if you’re at NBC and squint enough you might look at even a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating and think “hey, that’s still 46 percent better than Trauma did last week!” But if you’re a broadcast network on some level, even if only psychologically, a sub 2.0 rating for a scripted drama that’s not airing on a Friday night is probably just too bitter of a pill to swallow. Even for lowly NBC. I’m using the following Chuck-fan report card to analyze the ratings for Monday’s episode (once I see them): Adults 18-49 rating * 2.4 and above: emphatic fist pump * 2.3: half-hearted fist pump * 2.1-2.2: white knuckle time. But it’s not irrational to hope for renewal * 2.0: white knuckle time with gnawed fingernails added, but not yet completely irrational to hope for renewal * 1.9: Awwwwwww. * 1.8 or less: Awwwwww, oh well, enjoy the final episodes! * Substitute 1.8/1.9 for the less rational/former Brooklyn Dodgers fans: It’s been in repeats for two weeks and NBC hardly promoted last night’s episode, just wait until next week! Exclusive Interview: ZACHARY LEVI GETS A SEASON 3 UPGRADE ON ‘CHUCK’

The star talks about the new season, the six extra episodes and how the show has both changed and remained true to its roots. CHUCK is the NBC sci-fi comedy/drama about a young computer repair tech who gets caught up in espionage when his brain is filled with a secret government program that allows gives him all sorts of knowledge. Now in its third season, CHUCK’s return after Season Two looked iffy for awhile, but when it was picked up, NBC was very happy with the results that they commissioned an extra six episodes before any of the first thirteen of Season Three had aired. Zachary Levi, who plays the title character, spoke with iF about the extra episodes and how CHUCK, both the series and the character, has changed, yet remained true to itself now that our favorite Buy More employee has acquired martial arts skills thanks to an upgrade in his cranial computer intersect. iF MAGAZINE: Tonight marks the start of the airing of six additional CHUCK episodes that got ordered after Season Three had started production. Yvonne Strahovski Versus the Nose Ring

I teased a while back that I’d give you a couple tidbits about Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski, who plays Sarah on NBC’s Chuck. Coming up tomorrow (Monday, April 26), Chuck comes back after a couple weeks off with “Chuck Versus the Honeymooners,” and it’s GREAT! Forget the whole “Chuck’s a spy” or “Chuck’s not a spy” business. Chuck’s back and so is Sarah, but in a completely different way. Here’s part of an interview with Yvonne that was conducted BEFORE the enormous “game changing” episode, “Chuck Versus the Other Guy,” where Chuck and Sarah finally got together big time. While we didn’t talk about all the new developments on Chuck (like Chuck and Sarah hitting the sheets), here’s some general goodies about Sarah, her American accent, and why she misses her nose ring: KATHIE: What is your biggest challenge in playing Sarah this season? YVONNE: I think it is the fact that Chuck is becoming more of spy and I think for Sarah she’s becoming more of a human being and learning how to be sort of be somewhat normal and it is kind of baby steps for her cause she’s always been in the spy world. BubbleWatch: NBC’s ‘Chuck’

SHOW: “Chuck” (NBC) IN ITS FAVOR: It’s obvious that NBC likes “Chuck” and enjoys being in business with Josh Schwartz, Chris Fedak, Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin and company. Fans love it. A select group of critics love it. Both groups have proven to be easily mobilizable in the past, should another Save Our Show campaign be necessary. And the “Chuck” team has displayed a willingness to make all appropriate accommodations to lowering its budget and making nice with sponsors, which is the kind of flexibility penny pinching studios love. In addition, even though it isn’t necessarily saying much, “Chuck” has reliably delivered NBC’s best demo ratings on Monday nights, all through the spring. AGAINST IT: There’s nothing working against “Chuck” other than those pesky ratings, which were a worthy adversary last spring as well. “Chuck” got off to a really strong start this spring and it looked like we wouldn’t have to worry about this whole “bubble” nonsense. Then the numbers dropped. The numbers have leveled, but in a ridiculously tough time slot, poor “Chuck” is frequently getting creamed. OUR TOTALLY UNINFORMED GUESS: Last spring NBC was cutting primetime hours to make room for Jay Leno. This spring, the network has many more hours to fill and it seems to us that even with a tremendous development haul, NBC should have room for another season of “Chuck.” Now perhaps an *insanely* tremendous development haul might squeeze the action-comedy out, but we’re going with our wishful thinking that says that despite living dangerously once again, “Chuck” will be back next year. Co-creator Chris Fedak talks romance, Chuck’s dad and … Season 4?

“Chuck” has wrapped production on its third season, but when Zap2it reached co-creator Chris Fedak on Thursday (April 22), he was still at work — hashing out stories for Season 4. Wait — Season 4? Have stumbled onto a big scoop about the show’s future? Alas, not yet. “There’s no news there,” Fedak says. “We’re still waiting on NBC to make a decision.” Fedak does allow, though, that he and the rest of the “Chuck” team are optimistic about their chances for renewal. “I’m not a person who walks around with a great deal of confidence — I have a great deal of neuroses and anxieties, sure,” he says. “But we feel good — we have a great relationship with NBC and with Warner Bros. Everyone really digs the show. So we’re hopeful.” More immediate, though, are the six episodes that remain this season, starting with “Chuck vs. the Honeymooners” on Monday (April 26). In some ways, the final six episodes are like a head start on a fourth season, with Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) finally together but very much still figuring out how to be both a couple and a spy team. “Relationships take work,” Fedak says. “There relationship is certainly still a big part of the show, and there are things they have to learn about each other. Ryan McPartlin on the Chuck Season 3 Finale

Just like last year, it looks like the fate of Chuck on NBC is going to come down to the wire. If the worst happens, will fans be satisfied with the last episode? Chuck follows a geeky electronics store employee (Zachary Levi) whose life is turned upside down when a database of top secret government information is downloaded into his brain. The series cast includes Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, Joshua Gomez, Sarah Lancaster, Ryan McPartlin, Mark Christopher Lawrence, Scott Krinsky, Vik Sahay, and Julia Ling. This season, the ratings started out strong (for NBC) with a 2.9 rating in the 18-49 demo and 7.45 million viewers. Unfortunately, they’ve fallen quite a bit and hit a low of a 1.9 in the demo and 5.46 million. While the early numbers would have assured Chuck a third season, the later numbers put that possibility into question. If Chuck is cancelled, it doesn’t sound like this season’s finale, just like last year’s, will offer a satisfying conclusion to the series. In a recent interview, McPartlin (“Captain Awesome” himself) had this to say. PW: Earlier in the season Awesome toyed with taking Ellie to Africa before changing his mind — but I could have sworn I saw a jungle and tiger in this promo. What gives? Ryan: You might see Ellie and Awesome going to Africa. There’s some pretty cool stuff coming up. The writers and production team went all out — the next couple of episodes really take us through to the end of the season and introduce a new element of suspense and cliffhangers. PW: So there are cliffhangers? Ryan: Yea, they had to try and match last year and I think they’ve done a good job. Hopefully they can keep one-upping themselves if we get another season. There’s a bunch of Ring stuff you’ll never see coming. Just when you think its predictable, they throw in a killer twist. PW: That’s an interesting choice since “Chuck’s” future is still up in the air. Do you think they did that to not give NBC an easy out? Ryan: They definitely didn’t want to let people off too easily. There is a moment in the season finale when you think we’re wrapping up everything nice and neat. That’s when we pull the rug out from underneath you. PW: Are you frustrated to be back in this boat of not knowing if you’ll be back for a fourth season? Ryan: Of course it’s a little frustrating to be back where we were a year ago. Its not a comment on the show — I think we’re doing great work — it’s more of a comment on the state of network TV. You can see why Conan went to cable. At the same time, NBC has been very supportive the whole time, but I think now especially they need to not look at the brand — not the ratings — and figure out what kind of network they want to be. I think “Chuck” would be a great cornerstone of that brand. What do you think? Will you be happy if Chuck ends this way? Should they have filmed an alternate ending, just in case? SOURCE

This Just In: ‘Chuck’ renewal prospects ‘looking good’ by Michael Ausiello

I’m really not trying to toy with your emotions, Chuck fans. Honest. But I just received a fresh batch of extremely reliable intel that has led me to once again tweak the show’s status on my Bubble Show Scorecard.

After two anxiety-inducing weeks at “could go either way,” I’m happy to report that Chuck is back to being a “safe bet.” A well-placed source close to Team Bartowski whose name is not Josh Schwartz (scout’s honor!) tells me “it’s looking good” that NBC will do the right thing and renew the show for a fourth season.

A final decision isn’t expected for a few more weeks, so there’s a good chance my buzzometer will fluctuate again. Even more reason to enjoy this bit of good news while it lasts!

Parenthood pick up, but what about Chuck?

NBC has picked up its freshman drama “Parenthood” for a second season.
NBC still has a couple major titles on the bubble for renewal — namely “Chuck” and “Heroes” — but sources indicate both will probably return, with “Heroes” likely receiving a 13-episode “final season” order.

“It is all yet to be debated,” NBC primetime president Angela Bromstad said. “Both of those shows make sense with the new shows we’ll be bringing on.”

‘Chuck’ Co-Creator Chris Fedak on “Season 3.2″

If the last episode of ‘Chuck’ felt like a season finale… well, it’s because it was. The episode was initially supposed to have a thirteen episode season, but NBC decided to order another six episodes. According to Chris Fedak, who co-created the show with Josh Schwartz, the good news came at an opportune time: as they were writing episode thirteen.

In our wide-ranging talk, Fedak and I talked about how the pickup affected the writing process, how the new dynamic between the characters on the show is playing out, if he fears the energy will fizzle, why Tony Hale wasn’t around this year, and if he’s confident the show will get a season four.

With the Parenthood announcement, Chuck is the only NBC show who’s future is in doubt to me, and on the off chance that its ratings recover as they did last season, I’m holding it out of the remainder bin for one more week. Make no mistake, the ratings have to come back, or the show is history. They did come back about 20% at the end of last season. This season, who knows. Note that Chuck’s ratings average contains only a single repeat episode, and Heroes contains none, most of NBC’s fall shows have many repeat episodes factored into their ratings averages. The only reason I think Law & Order will be renewed based on earlier statements by NBC’s Angela Bromstad that she wasn’t going to be the one to cancel the show short of the broadcast drama longevity record. The ratings say it gets canceled. Some would put Heroes on NBC’s bubble. For me, its final show ratings of 2.2, 2.1, 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, 2.0 say its a goner, even on NBC. As horrible as the situation is, NBC will try something new other than keeping the ratings losers Trauma and Mercy. Sarah Walker, her character on “Chuck,” is certainly a woman of action — when not busting up spy rings, she’s often busting the heads of villains with her wicked fighting skills. But since the third season of the NBC spy show wrapped production three weeks ago, Strahovski has been taking a break. Being Sarah is hard work. “After eight months of ‘Chuck,’ it really takes it out of me,” the actress said in a Monday phone conversation. She doesn’t have any firm post-season plans — there is one potential project in the works, but she couldn’t say what it was. But she will be heading to to her native Australia soon for the premiere of a film she appears in, “I Love You Too” (to answer your next question, she thinks the film will get released in North America but she wasn’t sure). In the Q&A below, the actress answered some burning questions I had (and a few that fans had) after Monday’s pivotal episode of the show, which returns with six new episodes April 26. Questions are in bold type, answers are in regular type. What did you think of how Chuck and Sarah finally got together? Was it a relief? Was it a big deal in terms of your character? Yeah, I think it’s a huge relief for everyone. It’s like the natural progression of what should happen. I think there’s only so many times we could drag it out where they didn’t [get together]. There are only so many obstacles Chuck and Sarah can face. I think it’s really great and I think the fans are going to love it. I think there was a pent-up demand among the fans for this to happen. There was a big to-do when Sarah and Shaw got together. Is that something you followed at all, or is the online chatter something you try to stay away from? No, I hear about it. I don’t really go online a lot, I didn’t read about it but I’d heard that [some people] were very unhappy about the love interests that both Chuck and Sarah had, both Shaw and Hannah. People were unhappy. It’s just hard for us as viewers sometimes, I think, because Chuck and Sarah have such chemistry — it’s harder for us to invest in the new character. There’s a lot that we’ve invested in those characters, and so when somebody else comes along, there’s got to be a pretty good reason to start to invest in somebody else. I can understand how it could be hard for the viewers to watch it. Was it fun to do these next episodes where they’re together? Was it the same or was there a different feel? It’s a different feel. I think for my character, she’s always sort of been abnormal — she’s always been a spy and she doesn’t really know how to live a non-spy life. I think Chuck has taught her over the seasons how to sort of be more normal. I think she relaxes somewhat and she doesn’t hold her feelings in so much. It’s definitely an interesting journey for my character and it’s definitely a lot of fun to play that, when they’re together. It’s kind of a release. Yeah, and I’m hoping it’s going to be fun to see them adjust to them being a couple and see everyone around them adjust to that. Do you think it adds more comedy or more drama to the show? I don’t know, I would say maybe more dramatic I guess, in a way, because some problems occur later on. I guess [the relationship adds] a bit of both. There was a lot for Sarah to deal with in Season 3 — opening up to Chuck, then him choosing not to run off with her, her watching him change and contending with her own feelings and all that. Was this the most challenging season for you as an actress or was it on par with the previous seasons? I loved this season. I feel like it just gets better every season. The more complicated it gets, the more fun I have as an actress doing it. There were so many layers. The journey this season was kind of more complicated. She wanted to [run off] and Chuck rejected that idea, and I don’t think she was expecting that at all. That was a big, giant slap in the face. I think she wanted to open up but that kind of stopped her and she went back to square one. After [Monday's "Chuck" episode], I think it’s such a relief for her. She tried to find something else with Shaw but it’s just not the same. They both realized that whatever they were trying to look for in other people, they’re never going to find it, because it’s right there in front of them. You know, it wasn’t your performance at all, and I was upfront with Chris Fedak about this — I didn’t quite understand why Sarah was with Shaw. And his take was that he was the kind of guy she’d been with in the past, so that was somehow comforting to her. Is that your take on it also? Yeah, I agree, it kind of goes back to what I was saying before — she doesn’t know how to be a normal person and normal people I guess don’t appeal to her because she’s not really around them. To me as an actor, what I sort of rode on was the fact that they both lost people who were really important to them in the spy world. He had lost his wife and I had lost Bryce. They had an emotional understanding about each other. But yeah, it goes back to what you were saying before, it’s so hard to invest in something new when there’s so much already invested in Chuck and Sarah. Now that Chuck knows Sarah’s real name, will he start calling her Sam? No, I think it’s just Sarah. That’s how Chuck knows her. They’ll stay with that, I think. Will we see any more of Sarah’s family or parents in the last part of the season? No, I think that’ll have to wait for a possible fourth season. Are you going to participate in the fan efforts to get the show another season? Do you yourself have anything in the works in that arena? You know, I haven’t started to think about that yet, but I’ll jump on the bandwagon of whatever happens. So, before I let you go, I thought I’d ask some questions from fan. One wanted to know if you’re similar to Sarah Walker. The athletic part of it [is similar]. I love doing all sorts of sporty things. Have you ever had an idea for an episode? What would you like to do if you could write an episode? I’ve always had this idea, I’ve pitched it to Chris Fedak — to go to Fashion Week or Paris or Milan. I think it’d be a really great setup, to mix the catwalk and the models and have to wear different wigs and things. Another fan question: Are you into gaming or anything nerdy? No, not really gaming at all. But I was in [the videogame] “Mass Effect 2.” It is really weird to watch myself in a game, that’s really cool. So what would you say to get fans excited about the next set of episodes? Gosh, it gets pretty dramatic. The line between Chuck’s spy life and family life and who knows and who doesn’t know — it’s all going to come dangerously close. SOURCE

Chuck held steady versus the previous week with a 2.1 rating with adults 18-49. Not that it means anything, but Chuck hit a 3 week high in total viewers. Update: yes, Chuck did run against the the last part of the basketball game (no doubt the most-watched part of the game) on the west coast.
