Chuck 4×16 vs The Masquerade PROMO #2

CHUCK’S MYSTERY WOMAN: DO WE SPY TROUBLE?

This Monday on Chuck (NBC, 8/7c), a mysterious woman enters Team Bartowski’s orbit by way of a masquerade party. But it could be a bit until this Brit beauty’s true identity is unmasked –- and when it is, the reveal may be a doozy.

Lauren Cohan, familiar to fans of genre TV from her runs on Supernatural and very recently The Vampire Diaries, shared with TVLine a look at how her character, Vivian McArthur, catches the eye of our favorite spy guy.

TVLINE | Under what circumstances do we first meet Vivian?
Basically Chuck and Sarah come to find her [at a masked gala at a British manor] because they suspect her of being linked with Volkoff’s corporation. But then they find out that she’s actually in need of their protection. All of this is news to her, and we begin a journey to find out her… hmm, I don’t like the word “purpose”….

TVLINE | “Agenda”?
Agenda! That’s perfect.

TVLINE | How would you describe Vivian?
She’s kind of a well-educated, bumbling recluse.

TVLINE | Is she welcoming to Chuck and Sarah when they first approach her?
She’s very suspicious of them and what they want out of her. But then she joins forces with them.

TVLINE | Are there any hints dropped that she is harboring a secret?
We don’t know her exact connection to the Volkoff empire, and she… well, I’m afraid to say more.

TVLINE | If Chuck gets picked up for a fifth season, would Vivian be sticking around?
I don’t know. I know I’m on for about five episodes — I’m off for a couple right now, and then I come back. I’ve heard rumors of some really cool revelations, but the only thing is that some of them discount things that have already been revealed on Chuck. But again, they’re not concrete rumors.

TVLINE | There’s been speculation that she is Volkoff’s daughter and/or somehow related to Chuck, or she’s a spoiler for the Chuck/Sarah romance – no theories that are popular with fans. Did your time as Supernatural‘s Bela teach you to have a tough skin about such things?
Supernatural did, yeah, but Vampire Diaries was probably the biggest lesson because in the end, when I had my final couple of episodes…

TVLINE | … Rose got a piece of Damon.
Yeah, and the fans get very protective of Damon!

TVLINE | Was it a tease to bed Damon only to then have things go terribly South?
I thought it was interesting that they did that. I think that maybe Damon’s not really supposed to be in a engaged relationship, yet Rose kind of woke something in him. I don’t think it was love but a new side of humanity, and that paves the way for a new kind of storyline for him, which is exciting. I really loved that scene at the end of [my final episode] where Damon stops on the highway and has this complete mental breakdown.

TVLINE | Was Vampire Diaries your first death scene as an actress?
Yeah. On Supernatural they alluded that I was killed by hellhounds, but you don’t actually see it. It’s interesting, because [on Vampire Diaries] I was bitten by a wolf. I should stay away from creatures on four legs! [Laughs]

Chuck fans, who do you think Vivian will turn out to be?

CHUCK’S YVONNE STRAHOVSKI WEIGHS IN ON SARAH’S STRUGGLES WITH THE WEDDING

Chuck’s Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) has been anything but the regular “girl next door” in the NBC spy series, even when she was quite literally working next door to the Buy More. We have gotten to know her– and she has gotten to know parts of herself– in a way that no one probably expected when she first took the assignment and got involved in young Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi)’s life. She has taken great strides toward opening up emotionally, letting other people in, and accepting help from time to time. But she still has aways to go, especially when it comes to her personal life.

“I think she’s come a long way from the first season until now, but she still has a bit of a journey. I think she still has some work to do to become as comfortable as possible with the life with Chuck and living with him,” Strahovski agreed when LA TV Insider Examiner visited the Burbank set of Chuck earlier this month.

In “Chuck vs the C.A.T. Squad”, Sarah confronted a part of her past she thought she had frozen out of her life when her fiancé surprised her and brought back her old team, a group of Charlie’s Angel’s-esque girls. It wasn’t just learning to put past grudges aside that showed Sarah’s newfound maturity, though; she also had to confront her true feelings about her family situation when she attended her own engagement party– one that potentially could have been devoid of anyone from “her side.”

“I would like to see some family stuff [be explored],” Strahovski shared. “We don’t know what’s going to happen with the wedding or who’s going to come back…[and we did] meet some girls from Sarah’s past, which is fun, but I would love to look into the whole dad thing again and see what happened with the mom.”

After all, as far as Sarah has come with Chuck, she may not quite be whole without putting the pieces of her own family together. Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and perhaps even Mary (Linda Hamilton) can help fill a physical void, but as time goes on and Sarah sees their own mother-daughter bond deepen, it is sure to scratch at an already fresh wound.

“I think a part of her has been wanting [a family] for a long time, and even though she doesn’t know what it feels like, it seems that she does want a sense of security, and she’s found that in Chuck. She treasures it, even though there are still things surrounding that relationship that can still make her uncomfortable,” Strahovski admitted.

What could possibly make a kick-ass woman like Sarah uncomfortable? Well, how about a big, fancy wedding! Sarah isn’t exactly your typical girly-girl who might have tied a towel on her head playing bride as a kid!

Strahovski laughed and confirmed that she was sure there’d be some of the Bartowski women meddling, or perhaps more appropriately, helping Sarah in the areas where she lacks proficiency.

“I don’t think she understands how to plan a wedding or where to begin. I don’t think she knows why she is supposed to be excited about it at this point in time,” Strahovski pontificated.

“I think she’s excited about being with Chuck and loving Chuck, and that will never change. But being a girly-girl is something that she struggles with. I mean, she can fake it for a mission, but when it comes to actually being that person in real life, I think she’s still learning.”

It is in those more emotional and so-called “teaching moments” that we see the most interesting and diverse to both Sarah and Strahovski, after all. And those are the moments the fans feel confident will have her earning an Emmy nomination for her work in this fourth season. A fan campaign has cropped up online, taking out ads in Emmy Magazine and flooding Twitter with the hashtag of #Emmy4Yvonne in order to spread their cause around.

Strahovski, who was extremely flattered that the fans would rally for her in this way, said it was certainly a dream to be nominated but she still thought it was a long-shot. She might be too humble to expect any accolades or awards, but her work speaks for itself. And as the wedding plans elaborate because the date creeps closer, something tells us there will be plenty more emotional work to draw from when sending clips for consideration to the Academy!

You can see Strahovski kick-ass (and often literally!) when Chuck airs on NBC Mondays at 8pm.

CHUCK’S JOSHUA GOMEZ SPIES ‘AWESOME’ TWIST

This week on NBC’s Chuck (Mondays at 8/7c), Morgan gets a blast from the past when Sarah’s former partner in slinky sleuthing, Carina (played by Mini Anden), resurfaces in Burbank as part of a larger C.A.T. Squad reunion.

Of course, since their last meet-up, Morgan has gone onto become somewhat of a junior spy himself — a development that delights Joshua Gomez to no end.

“It’s been awesome, amazing, and so much fun,” Gomez tells TVLine. “It’s something I’ve wanted since the pilot, to be a part of the spy missions. I was always so jealous of Zach [Levi] getting to do all this cool stuff while I was stuck at the store.”

Now, Gomez is broadening his horizons by way of all manner of espionage-related excitement. “I launched a missile from a car with Captain Awesome, there’s been car chase stuff, shooting off guns – not well, mind you,” the actor shares. “I’m not much of an ‘action guy’ – a shocker, I know – but those days are just starting!”

Engaging in on-screen engagements also has afforded Gomez the chance to work alongside Adam Baldwin in a whole new way, as Casey somewhat begrudgingly schools Morgan on the art of spying. “We have discovered this great dynamic,” Gomez raves. “I’ll go to him and say, ‘I’m going to try this,’ and he’ll say [adopting a gruff, monotone voice], ‘Ah. Hysterical. I love it.’”

“Mostly, Adam teaches me to shut up and hit my mark,” Gomez continues with a laugh. “He also gets a kick out of watching Zach and I riff and do our scene, then he’ll come in at the end — like a sniper — and just say a few words or grunt and steal the whole damn thing.”

Speaking of Casey, super-sultry Carina’s reappearance also comes on the heels of Morgan making romantic progress with his mentor’s daughter, Alex — another deepening of character welcomed by Gomez. “Mekenna [Melvin] is a wonderful, sweet actress, and she fits in perfectly,” he says. “Morgan and Alex is fun to play, while having Casey looming over them is… well, scary.”

On next week’s Chuck, Gomez gets to return to his struggling actor roots by going undercover with Casey as a bartender at a ritzy British dinner party. Reflecting on his days as a mixologist, “I wasn’t very good, but New York City is tough,” he reports. “Make one wrong drink and it doesn’t go over well at all.”

Chuck fans, have you been enjoying Morgan’s entry into the spy world?

YVONNE STRAHOVSKI ON HER CHUCK ENGAGEMENT: WHAT MOONLIGHTING CURSE?

Fear not, Chuck fans: Yvonne Strahovski doesn’t believe in the Moonlighting curse.

Even though Strahovski’s Sarah recently got engaged to Chuck (Zachary Levi), the actress believes NBC’s spy drama won’t suffer the same fate as Moonlighting, the ’80s sitcom that famously fell apart when Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepherd’s main characters finally hooked up.

Watch full episodes of Chuck in our Online Video Guide

“It’s often the death of the show when you break the tension and the two lead characters get together,” Strahovski tells TVGuide.com. “We’ve created a new dynamic [that's] slightly Mr. & Mrs. Smith in a way. It’s a healthy union for our show. … I like the fact that we’re together.”

But that doesn’t mean the happy couple won’t face some challenges. In particular, Sarah, who has forsaken having a family for the more adventurous life as a hardened spy, will battle some major adjustment issues as she begins to settle down.

“Ever since Chuck and Sarah finally got together, I feel like Sarah has been becoming more normal,” Strahovski says. “From Season 1, she’s struggled with that. She’s really been about being a spy and her family life hasn’t been exactly normal either.”

Agreeing to Chuck’s proposal is just the first step in normality for Sarah, who would rather be off on missions than planning the impending nuptials. “Sarah is still learning how to plan a wedding,” Strahovski says. “Ellie [Sarah Lancaster], Chuck’s sister, is a real girl and knows how to do all that stuff, whereas Sarah is a total dork and has no idea. [She] doesn’t really get as excited about it, which is a problem. She loves Chuck, but Sarah hasn’t started caring about planning the wedding. That might change.”

Because Sarah doesn’t have a large family like her fiancé, Chuck will go on the hunt to find people from her past to be a part of their celebration. “He discovers that she used to have a cat squad,” Strahovski says of Monday’s episode, which includes the return appearance of Carina (Mini Anden). “Later on in the season, we might go back and revisit Sarah’s past in terms of family stuff.”

As for when the actual wedding will take place, Strahovski says she hasn’t seen a script yet. But she says the anticipation of potentially wearing a wedding dress is as exciting as putting on the engagement ring each day for shooting.

“I have moments of panic when I’m driving home because I realize I’m not wearing the engagement ring, and I go, ‘Oh, where’s my ring?!’” she says with a laugh. “And then I realize it’s not really my ring.”

Chuck airs Mondays at 8/7c on NBC.

Could Chuck’s Chuck and Sarah be heading for the altar before season’s end? Scott Krinsky isn’t spilling but says, “I could imagine that if Chuck and Sarah were to get married, how could you not find a way to include Jeffster in that, right? If the wedding happens, there’s probably a good possibility that [he'll be booked as the wedding band].” And after four seasons, Krinsky says he’s used to the speculations about whether or not the show that’s perpetually on the bubble will get picked up for another year. “It’s Chuck — it’s part of the excitement,” he says. “It feels gratifying to say that we’ve been around for four seasons, and the fans are already starting their campaigns. Tv Guide on Chuck season 5

Question: Chuck is one of my favorite shows, but lately it seems to be heading towards an ultimate finale by wrapping up many story lines. Does this mean the producers think it is going to get cancelled? Has NBC indicated that it wasn’t going to get picked up next season? — Stan

Matt Roush: When hasn’t Chuck lived on the bubble? As usual, we’re not likely to know whether Chuck gets a fifth season until the fall schedule is announced in May. Fans are used to that, and so are the producers. Your observations are on point, though, because the writers went into this season with a 13-episode order and constructed the arc involving Volkoff and Chuck’s mom with that in mind. Last week’s episode, the 13th, was designed to work as a season finale or maybe even a series finale, which is why it sometimes felt like they were rushing to wrap things up. Ellie giving birth, Chuck finally proposing to Sarah, lots of closure there. But NBC upped Chuck’s order to a full season, so while there’s now more story to tell, it means fans will once again be sweating out news of the show’s future for the next few months. Complicating matters is the NBC-Comcast merger with new management overseeing the entertainment division. All bets are off right now in predicting what’s staying and what’s going and what NBC prime time will look like next season.

"By the way this is post number 300 of my blog! Really happy!

‘CHUCK’ CREATORS JOSH SCHWARTZ AND CHRIS FEDAK DISCUSS ‘SEASON 4.2′ – SPOILERS!

By pretty much any standard, last week’s episode of “Chuck” was jam-packed, what with the bad guys being taken down, Chuck (Zachary Levi) proposing to Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) and Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) giving birth. But according to co-creator Josh Schwartz, “Chuck vs. the Push Mix” actually left a few things out.

“Eleven episodes’ worth has been left out,” Schwartz tells Zap2it, referring to the final 11 episode of Season 4 that start Monday (Feb. 7). “Plus another season.”

Wait — another season? Does Schwartz know something the rest of us don’t?

“No, no, not at all,” he says. “I’m just saying we’ve got enough. We’ve got enough gas in this tank.”

Any news about Season 5 is still a good ways away, but Schwartz and “Chuck” co-creator Chris Fedak have a lot to say about the rest of Season 4, including the returns of Linda Hamilton and Timothy Dalton and parenthood issues — among other things — for Ellie and Awesome. Here are some highlights from Zap2it’s interview with the duo.

Zap2it: The situation with the back-11 order this season is pretty similar to what you went through last year, right?
Chris Fedak: Yes. We had an order for 13 episodes, so we broke a very tightly plotted 13 episodes that we wanted to culminate with Ellie giving birth and Chuck proposing to Sarah. So we were kind of tied into that structure.

Josh Schwartz: Me being the negative Nelly I am, I told Fedak to put it all in [episode] 13. “That’s it — there’s no way we’re going to get more episodes again.” Luckily he didn’t listen to me.

Fedak: [Laughs] Josh wanted to have the wedding in 13 as well.

When you get an order for more episodes sort of late in the game, how do you handle it? Do you just go scurrying back to the writers room?
Fedak: We’re always scurrying back to the writers room. That’s pretty much the usual for us.

Schwartz: Fedak is one of the best scurriers in the business.

Fedak: We have big arcs and shapes we’ve been talking about for the last couple of years. So last season we put Chuck and Sarah together at the end of episode 13, and we knew we wanted to do a show about Chuck and Sarah as a couple. So we took those back six episodes and focused on that part of the story. This year, with Chuck and Sarah engaged, it’s a new season in a way.

With episode 14 and on, we’re kind of relaunching the show, and we’re doing it with a couple of really fun, action-packed episodes. The last couple episodes have been very mythology-oriented — we’ve taken on Volkoff, we had the mom story. So now we’re launching Season 4.2. This part of the story is the team in action again. … We have big mythology we’re heading to, but it’s kind of fun to reset and do some standalone missions.

Schwartz: We also have Sarah as a belly dancer coming up. That should be enough.

Fedak: It will erase your mind.

Will Linda Hamilton and Timothy Dalton be back on the show?
Fedak: Linda is definitely returning to the show — she’s actually in [Monday's episode]. And Timothy is also returning.

Do you have a timetable for his return?
Fedak: We’re working on that now, but both will be in multi-episode arcs.

You can’t leave Volkoff alive and just have him disappear, I guess.
Fedak: Once you have Timothy Dalton — he’s just been so wonderful. When you talk about scurrying back to the writers room, after we watched the first episode with him, we were so excited because it gave us the opportunity to build out that character some more. So [having] 11 more episodes, we definitely wanted to bring Volkoff back and have some more fun.

What’s your philosophy on mixing in standalone episodes with the bigger arcs?
Schwartz: The bigger stories have great momentum to them and great traction to them. It’s sometimes a function of the number of episodes per season — you need to have standalone episodes. But some of those standalones have been some of our favorites. When we first started the show, we were asked to rely heavily on standalone episodes, because there’s this philosophy that people are finding the show for the first time over the first handful of episodes.

But when we locked into that first run of mythology episodes, around episode six of the first season, that’s where the show really found its creative footing and where people got invested in a real emotional way. So those arcs are always very successful, but some of those standalones have been some of the classic “Chuck” episodes.

Fedak: We love both [types of episodes]. And we also like to build our mythology episodes so there’s at least some standalone component to them. The mission is something you can watch and not totally be tied into the arc of the show. But when it comes to having fun, the standalones give us an opportunity to break out and try something on for size.

Is it kind of like an “X-Files” approach then?
Fedak: I think we might do more mythology episodes than “The X-Files” did. … In Season 1 we really got into how many would be standalon and how many would be [arced]. But like Josh said, [the ongoing story] was something the audience latched onto. … It was exciting for us because it allowed us to do those kinds of episodes.

Schwartz: And you get to dig deeper, you have more emotional repercussions, the world of the characters becomes richer. There are so many things about it that are exciting. But it’s scary too, because you’re saying to the audience, “This train is not going to the same stop every week, so if you’re on the train you’ve got to stay on.” When a show decides to leave its episodic nature behind and embrace more serialized storytelling, creatively it’s very rewarding. In terms of viewership, you never know. So as Chris said, we’re thrilled the audience wanted to take that ride.

Now that Chuck and Sarah are engaged, is either of them going to be extra-eager to plan the wedding?
Fedak: We have a really exciting picking-out-china sequence. … Whenever you’re getting married, there are crazy things that happen. It’s one of the most stressful times in any couple’s life. What’s fun for us is to turn that into, what’s the exciting spy version of that? How do we fold it into Chuck’s spy life? As well as the fact that Sarah is a superspy — the more we bring her into the kind of human world of Chuck, it’s exciting to see the woman behind the superspy mask that is Sarah Walker. It’s another great opportunity for us to continue to explore our characters.

How will having a baby affect Ellie and Awesome [Ryan McPartlin]?
Fedak: It’s funny, because in my personal life, I have a daughter named Clara …

Schwartz: Nepotism! [Note: The baby in the show is not Fedak's daughter; she's just named after her.]

Fedak: That’s definitely part of the family story. “Chuck” is not just about the spy world; it’s also about the family life. And the fact that there’s a new Woodcomb who’s part of the Bartowski family is an exciting change to the show. But there are other things going on with their lives. We have some neat stuff in the back 11 — and the spy world isn’t done with them. A lot of what we’ve done this season is to explore the spy world from a family perspective, so we’re going to have some very interesting stuff come up for Ellie and Awesome, and how they may perhaps, in their own way, get into a bit of trouble.

And since Ellie just had a baby on screen, can we assume you won’t write Sarah’s real-life pregnacy into the show?
Fedak: We’ll be shooting around it a little bit.

Are there any remnants of the Buy More as a CIA front?
Schwartz: Greta will all be explained soon enough.

Are there other Gretas coming in?
Schwartz: Some classic Gretas [namely Stacy Keibler and Isaiah Mustafa] will be returning, and the whole Greta operation is going to pay off. In a satisfying way, don’t you think?

Fedak: Absolutely.

Schwartz: What was designed once as shameless stunt casting to keep ourselves alive will pay off in a creatively satisfying way.

Fedak: That was a fun thing. It started off as a lark … then as we kind of got more into it, we decided to build it into the mythology of the show. We have some stuff coming up that explains what Greta was all about.

What about the weaponry that was built into the store? Is there any chance that, say, Jeff or someone could accidentally trigger it?
Fedak: I’d say it’s pretty well secured, but you never know.

“Chuck” continues its season at 8 p.m. ET Monday on NBC.

RAY WISE AS VOLKOFF’S LAWYER

“Chuck” is about to do battle with the devil himself.

Ray Wise, who played Satan on The CW’s “Reaper,” will guest-star in an upcoming episode of the NBC show, co-creator Chris Fedak tells Zap2it. “He plays Volkoff’s [Timothy Dalton] lawyer, and he’s just wonderful,” Fedak says.

And yes, you can infer from that that Dalton will be returning to “Chuck” in the coming weeks. Fedak says that both Dalton and Linda Hamilton will appear in “multiple episodes” between now and the end of the season. Hamilton next appears in Monday’s (Feb. 7) episode, Fedak says, and the show is currently working out a schedule with Dalton.

Wise will make his appearance in the season’s 16th episode, “Chuck vs. the Masquerade,” which will also feature the debuts of fellow guests Lauren Cohan (“Supernatural”) and Robin Givens. Fedak describes Cohan’s character as a young woman who is “dragged into the spy world” — sort of how Chuck (Zachary Levi) himself was at the beginning of the series. Givens (“House of Payne,” “Nikita”) is playing a National Security Council official whose work coincides with that of Team Chuck and who takes an interest in Casey (Adam Baldwin).

Prior to “Reaper,” Wise was probably best known for playing Leland Palmer on “Twin Peaks” and Vice President Hal Gardner on Season 5 of “24.” His other recent credits include guest spots on “Psych,” “How I Met Your Mother” and “Dollhouse.”

Stay tuned later this week for more from Fedak and “Chuck” co-creator Josh Schwartz.
