The Chuck Panel Brings the Fun and Funk at Comic-Con!
25
July
2010

Just like last year, the Chuck panel at Comic-Con was one of the silliest, most raucous and most fun of the weekend. The fan reaction to the cast and crew of the show was impressive too — the amount of love in the room for the NBC series was heartwarming. We were treated to a reel of favorite moments from the last season, which featured lots of fights, Chuck/Sarah kisses, and it ended the same way the season finale ended: asking who Chuck’s mom is. (Note: there was a scene of Linda Hamilton in Terminator but thus far, it appears the actress hasn’t signed on for the role . . .yet.)

Stars Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahowski, Joshua Gomez, Ryan McPartlin, Adam Baldwin, Sarah Lancaster, Vik Shay, Scott Krinsky, and Mark Christopher Lawrence were joined by showrunners Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz — and each and every panel member danced out onstage. The good vibes kept rolling, with Baldwin addressing the fan support of the show and how it helped prevent the series from being canceled this year, saying, “you really put us over the top.”

Hear about what you can expect in season four when you read more.

* According to Schwartz, the search for Chuck’s mother is going to be a “huge part of the season,” in both Chuck’s spy world and personal world. They wouldn’t confirm the casting for mother Bartowski, but Schwartz did acknowledge the push to cast fan favorite Linda Hamilton, and even mentioned that Hamilton is aware of it — having told him, “I heard I’m Chuck’s mom.” If it’s not her, I have faith we’ll see an actress we’ll be happy about; Schwartz said he thinks about “If Chuck and Morgan were real people, who would they be excited about?” And we won’t have to wait long to see her, either: we’ll get “a glimpse of mom in episode one.”
* Which guest stars will we see? Nicole Richie is coming back, and we’ll also see Olivia Munn, Steve Austin, Dolph Lundgren, and — I’m dead serious — Isaiah Mustafa, the Old Spice guy! When the season starts, Buy More will be owned and operated by the CIA, with “the most incredible Buy More employees you’ve ever seen.” Munn will play a character named Greta in the first episode, a “kick-ass green shirt.” Funnily, Greta is a character that will stick around, but will be portrayed by different actors, male or female. For instance, Mustafa will also play Greta, but in the second episode!
* Levi and Strahowski were asked if their working relationship has changed since Chuck and Sarah got together, and they were kind of adorable, with Levi saying that “the love’s always been there.” Speaking of Chuck and Sarah, it sounds like they’ll continue to be happy together for a while; Fedak says “we’ve learned about putting people between Chuck and Sarah,” and though he wanted to stay ambiguous about the subject, he made a promise to Chuck/Sarah fans: “This year, you’ll be very happy.”
* One of my favorite moments was Gomez doing an impression of Ryan McPartlin when McPartlin teased him about being a spy first in the earlier part of this season (Imagine Gomez saying “I’m a spy now” in McPartlin’s distinctive voice).
* Second favorite moment? When Baldwin took over the moderation of the panel, asking Gomez what he liked most about John Casey. “You have really soft hands, actually,” was his reply.

Sarah and Ryan interview

“Chuck’s” Ryan McPartlin has a drinking problem: He doesn’t drink manly drinks.

The actor’s favorite girly drink is outed at Comic-Con Saturday (July 24) while he and Sarah Lancaster pair up for an interview.

It’s all about motherhood on the upcoming fourth season of “Chuck,” and the actors can’t be more excited (and rather intimdated) by the news that “Terminator” badass Linda Hamilton will play the long lost Bartowski mom.

As we return to Burbank, we pick up after Ellie (Lancaster) has discovered Chuck’s (Zachary Levi) spy life. They’re also in mourning for their father Steven (Scott Bakula) who died at the close of last season.

Ellie and Awesome (McPartlin) have some other family business though. Apparently, there’s going to be a baby Awesome on the way. Let’s keep him or her away from any potential Intersect downloads hidden in Baby Einsteins, okay?

Lancaster and McPartlin have some awesome (sorry!) rapport.

“Chuck” returns on Monday, Sept. 20.

Chuck Gets a Famous New Mama, While Jeffster Goes Gaga for Comic-Con

The Nerd Herd is no more!

And really, that’s pretty much the least scoopy-scoop the Chuck gang dished during their always amazing Comic-Con panel Saturday morning. The biggest news? Mama’s home, and rounding out the Bartowski clan is Terminator’s Linda Hamilton. Holler!

Also, Jeffster goes Gaga, the Awesomes get awesomer and Chuck and Sarah might actually be happy…

The most exciting moment from this morning’s panel came when fans were given a great big recap of the end of Chuck’s third season—and then, just when you thought is was over, Linda’s famous turning-toward-the-camera scene from Terminator 2 popped up to reveal Mommy Dearest. Cue enormous applause here.

“Forget Angelina Jolie when she was doing the Tomb Raider stuff,” Ryan McPartlin (Awesome) gushed. “Linda Hamilton was that—the sunglasses, the gun, the biceps. It’s great!”

Show runner Chris Fedak revealed that we will see mom in the season premiere, so there won’t be much of a wait for that moment. Sadly, any sort of reunion won’t be an enitrely happy one, says Sarah Lancaster (Ellie). “I don’t know that finding mom is the best thing, or will be well-received by Ellie. She left, you know? It’s not the same sweetness as it was with Scott Bakula’s character. It’s going to be more like ‘Who are you? Where did you go?’”

Plus, Ellie and Awesome are baby-bound this season (there’s even the possibility of a belly bump!), so expect everything to be slightly more complicated. “Ellie is starting a family this year, so I think that will probably raise the stakes for Chuck in wanting to protect everybody,” teases Sarah. “And we’re going to have little Awesomes running around.” Awwwww…esome!

Not having their own kids this season will be Chuck and Sarah, who are simply enjoying coupledom—kinda.

When asked about a remark he made during the panel, Josh Schwartz explained: “I didn’t say they’ll be happy, I said we’ll be happy.” Oh, semantics.

He continued: “I think we’re happy if they’re happy or if what they’re struggling with [is] we’re a couple. There won’t be a third-party romantic interloper for the couple, but there will be the struggles that a couple faces.”

Yvonne Strahovski (Sarah) is hoping Chuck and Sarah stay in a good place, though. “I have to say I was very excited to finally be part of the some of the happy stuff,” she laughed, before pleading with her bosses. “There’s probably going to more of that this season, I hope. Please.”

Zachary Levi (Chuck) even got a little googly-eyed thinking about his onscreen lovah, saying: “Even though we’re together now and we’re a couple officially, a love has always been there.” Awww.

And what about those other Chucksters?

• There’s much more spy fun to come! “Chuck and Morgan are going to be a pretty bad, but good, but bad spy team,” teased Josh. And that Morgan Grimes pair is still in action, too. Adam Baldwin also teased that Casey might actually be going on a mission or two with his long lost daughter, so stick around for that.

• Jeffster (and Big Mike) lives! Says Josh: “These guys are a huge part of the show, and we can promise you, they will be back.” And Vik Sahay (Lester) has an idea for their return: “We pick up on the lam. I hope we’re somehow boiled and embroiled living in Loretta. Maybe doing a vision quest in the Mohave Desert.” Or, they might be hookers. Josh and Chris’ idea, not mine.

• The Buy More is now an official CIA establishment. And that’s not all.

• The Old Spice guy Isaiah Mustafa will be around next season, and get this: He’s playing the same part as Olivia Munn. What the whaaa?! Explains Chris: “We realized we were stunt casting one part over and over again, so each week we’re going to try to bring a new spy in to play the part of Greta.” In the premiere, it’s Olivia. In week two, it’s Isaiah. Any pitches for week three?

• Oh, and did we mention that Jeffster performed Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”? Yeah, it was pretty much the best thing you can imagine.

So much more to say, so little time! Are you loving this Chuck news?

Comic-Con’s ‘Chuck’ panel: his mom, new Buy More boss, and Jeffster on the lam

Linda Hamilton will play Chuck’s mom in the series’ new season, it was revealed at the start of the show’s panel. “Are we happy with this?” asked co-creator Josh Schwartz. Wild cheering ensued.

Guest star Olivia Munn will play Greta, a new Buy More exec, in the season premiere. But Munn will be only one of many rotating guest stars who’ll each manage the Buy More for an episode, now that it’s become an owned-and-operated CIA outfit.

“The search for Mom will be a big part of season four,” said Schwartz. “We’ve also learned about putting people between Chuck and Sarah.” So rest assured they will remain a couple. The panel commenced with a video of Jeffster performing Lady’s Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” Schwartz said jokingly that he’s been thinking of a Chuck spin-off: “Jeffster On The Lam,” he said, a new kind of adventure series.

If the panel — which included all the show’s stars, plus co-creators Schwartz and Chris Fedak — could be said to have a fan-fave, it was probably Adam Baldwin, who was showered with cheers and laughs at his every raised eyebrow. He also came in for some ribbing from his fellow cast-members. When Baldwin mentioned his Joss Whedon series Firefly, the cast rolled its collective eyes and someone remarked, “There he goes again, talking about his old shows.” Clearly, this is a cast that had bonded rock-solidly.
